Ali Harbi Ali, a 25-year-old Briton of Somali origin, must appear before a London judge on Thursday, Scotland Yard reported, stating that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with this attack.
“We will defend in court that this murder has a terrorist connection, that is, that it had both religious and ideological motivations,” said Nick Price, head of the prosecution’s antiterrorist division.
Ali “was also charged with preparing for terrorist acts after reviewing the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in their investigation,” he added.
Police had previously mentioned “a motivation potentially linked to Islamic extremism“.
Amess, a 69-year-old Conservative MP and father of five, was stabbed on Friday while meeting with constituents at a Methodist church in Leigh-on-Sea, about 60 kilometers east of London.
The young man, who according to the British media had followed a program against radicalization, was arrested at the scene.
The attack shocked the UK, still marked by the assassination of the pro-European Labor MP Jo Cox in June 2016 at the hands of a far-rightist one week before the referendum on Brexit.
