Bolsonaro government threatens to prosecute magazine for parody

“Last night I sent a document to the PF requesting the opening of an investigation to determine if there was a possible crime against honor of President Jair Bolsonaro, committed by IstoÉ magazine, “Justice Minister Anderson Torres posted on Thursday.

In his communication to the PF, the minister requests that the inquiries focus on the “latest edition” of the magazine published on “October 18” and, eventually, be extended to other articles.

The cover of the magazine is illustrated with the image of Bolsonaro a la Hitler next to the word “Genocide.”

The NGO Reporters Without Borders published a report in July that outlined a series of actions by President Bolsonaro, whom it called a “predator of the press”, against media and journalists critical of the government.

In its latest edition, IstoÉ published a report on the president’s policy in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, which he compared with the methods applied by the Nazis.

The magazine mentions the “abominable attitudes of the merchant of death” that during the coronavirus pandemic “encouraged victims to be treated like guinea pigs.”

The Bolsonaro government is accused, by the parliamentary commission that investigated the management of the pandemic, of nine crimes, among them was mentioned the connections between the executive and private health operators in the promotion of ineffective drugs for the “early treatment” of the coronavirus.

One of them is Prevent Senior, a health operator for the elderly designated to apply experimental treatments without the consent of patients and to make up the number of deaths from coronavirus, among others. The São Paulo Prosecutor’s Office is investigating this case, which has impacted Brazil.
