The complaint is based on an investigation published by the American magazine The Intercept, according to which the plan sought at any cost to prevent Arce, from the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) by Evo Morales, assumed the presidency of Bolivia.
“With this case, we are going to request the extradition of Mr. López Julio from Brazil so that he can be held accountable,” said Government Minister Eduardo del Castillo.
López left the country before Arce assumed power in 2020.
According to Del Castillo, the former minister had “constant contacts with these irregular and paramilitary groups through companies with experience in combat such as in Iraq, Afghanistan and others” for the assassination attempt, the Bolivian daily La Razón reported.
The Vice Minister of Citizen Security of Bolivia, Roberto Ríos, highlighted on Tuesday that a series of audio included in The Intercept investigation allows “determining” that López “is the mastermind behind the assassination attempt of the former candidate and current president Arce “, but it is not ruled out that there are more involved.
Ríos said that the attempt to attack the now Bolivian president did not materialize because, among other things, the authorities took the necessary measures, while Arce, who knew these intentions, was very cautious by not participating in on-air events. free.
López is on the run from Bolivian justice and is already accused of the coup d’état perpetrated against former President Morales and the massacres of Sacaba and Senkata in November 2019, apart from another process for overpricing in the purchase of tear gas for the security forces.
Bolivian authorities also issued arrest warrants for former Armed Forces Commander Williams Kaliman and former Police Commander Yuri Calderón after failing to appear for a hearing due to the coup d’état.
The case is part of an investigation following the complaint of a former deputy of the Movement to Socialism (MAS) who accused Luis Fernando Camacho, governor of Santa Cruz and candidate in the presidential elections last year, to instigate, together with his father and various military and police commanders, the riots and the departure from power of Evo Morales after the 2019 elections.
