The exit from quarantine in the Australian city began at midnight, after six isolation impositions that began in March 2020 and they ended up becoming a kind of tunnel with no light in sight.
The announcement of the expected end of the restrictions had been made last Sunday by the premier of the state of Victoria (with capital in Melbourne), Daniel Andrews, when the city passed the goal of 70% of the population fully vaccinated.
89% of the inhabitants received at least one dose, compared to 65% of the rest of the state, where restrictive measures are still in force.
New freedoms will be granted in November, when it is expected that those vaccinated with two injections will be 80%.
“Today is a day that Victorians can be proud of what they have done,” Andrews said shortly before the end of the quarantine.
How was the quarantine in Melbourne
In the city of nearly five million people, there is no longer a nighttime curfew and there is no need to display any of the six coded reasons for being able to leave the house.
You can also visit the homes of relatives or friends in groups of up to ten people, reopen non-essential businesses, hair salons and beauty salons with income controlled by quantity.
Students can return to school in person, even if only part-time, and it will be possible to meet up to 15 people outdoors.
Pubs, restaurants and other venues will be able to house 20 fully vaccinated people indoors and 50 outdoors: this same rule is valid for weddings and funerals.
As for travel, it will be possible to travel within a radius of 15 kilometers from the house but it will not yet be allowed to circulate through the rest of the state of Victoria.
In the last hours, the Australian state registered a total of 1,838 new cases, bringing the group of patients who still have the disease to 23,376.
