Uruguay paid US8 million for meat export duties in 2022

China was the market in which the country had to pay most of the amount to be able to ship its products.

He National Meat Institute (INAC) reported that the country paid 338 million dollars regarding tariffs for the export of bovine and ovine meat during the year 2022.

China positioned itself as the market in which Uruguay it had to disburse most of the total amount to be able to sell its products, with a tariff burden of more than 186.2 million dollars for beef, and more than 6 million dollars for sheep meat.

Only for bovine meat, 316 million dollars were paidrepresenting 93% of the total amount, while for the trifles they were more than 15.2 million dollars, meaning 5%. On the other hand, for sheep meat more than 7 million dollars were paid, this being 2% of the total.

Despite the increase in the price of bovine meat tariffs, the total paid in 2022 was barely more than 1 million dollars higher than the 337 million dollars transacted in 2021, mainly due to the fact that the decrease in the tariff value for sheep meat compensated the final balance. For their part, the giblets paid practically the same amount.

Leaving China aside, in the breakdown of destinations, nearly $40 million in tariffs were paid to USA for the entry of bovine meat; more than 19 million dollars to Japan; more than 45 million dollars to the European Union; and more than 42 million dollars to the rest of the countries.

Uruguay exported bovine meat for 2,600 million dollars

During the past year, Uruguay exported bovine meat in the order of $2.6 billionChina being the main destination market and representing more than 56% of shipments and 59% of tariff payments.

The sheep meat tariff was 60% lower than in 2021, due to the decrease in placements in China, which went from 97 million dollars to 40 million dollars. In another order, offal maintained the same level of tariff pressure despite a 15% drop in the exported value.
