The vote on the social security reform in Deputies was extended for one month

With votes from the Cabildo Abierto and the Frente Amplio, the Lower House confirmed the extension of the initiative by 53 votes in 97.

The Camera of Deputies approved the extension of the term for the study and voting on the social security reform until the day April 30th. The extension request, an initiative of the legislators of Town meeting (AC), Alvaro Perrone and Martin Sodanowas approved with votes from his party and the broad front (FA), with a result of 53 affirmative votes in 97 possible.

The discussion of the bill included the participation of legislators Martín Sodano (CA), Daniel Peña (People’s Party), Ivan Posada (independent party), Gonzalo Civila (FA), Conrado Rodríguez (Colorado Party) and Juan Martín Rodríguez (National Party).

The representatives of CA had affirmed this Tuesday that they would refuse to vote on the reform if their claims regarding prohibiting the possibility that the AFAP they can invest their money abroad and reduce the retirement age from 25 to 15 years.

The National Party bench expressed its disagreement with the vote because the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pouhad requested not to postpone the vote on a reform that the government considers urgent, and they are willing to assume the political cost.

Along the same lines are the legislators from the Colorado Party, the Independent Party (PI) and the People’s Party, who had already agreed not to support an extension of the term with their votes, and had clarified their conviction to vote on the project before on Friday, as assured by the PI deputy, Posada.

On the other hand, from the FA they maintained that they did intend to extend the term, for which reason they supported the motion presented by CA. Deputy Civila said that today “62 pages of modifications and proposals from political parties were known”, something that “seems impossible” to evaluate before Friday.
