The perpetrators, who were driving in a blue station wagon, pretended that passers-by needed petrol money for a trip to Berlin, the Carinthia State Police Directorate reported. In Ferlach (Klagenfurt district) they relieved a 58-year-old local of 250 euros, in Grafenstein (Klagenfurt district) a 27-year-old Ukrainian by 100 euros. The first fraud occurred around 5:45 p.m. on Rosentalstraße (B85) in Ferlach. The two unknown perpetrators stopped the 58-year-old and pretended that they had no money for petrol for their car journey. They asked the man to exchange 1,500 Romanian lei for 250 euros. The man drove to the ATM with the suspects, withdrew the money and exchanged the euro banknotes for 1,500 lei. At home he noticed that the banknotes had not been valid for ten years. Police described the people as “southern types” with “unkempt looks,” with one man wearing a full beard.
The 27-year-old Ukrainian was approached by an unknown perpetrator at 7:10 p.m. on Grafenstein’s main street. He wanted to exchange 500 lei for 100 euros. He claimed that he needed the euros for petrol to go to Berlin and that his ATM card wasn’t working. After the change, the man drove on in a dark blue station wagon with German license plates in the direction of Klagenfurt. The victim only noticed the fraud later and called the police. In this case, too, the perpetrator was described as a “southern type” and unkempt. He is about 1.80 meters tall, very slim, has short dark hair, dark eyes and striking yellow teeth. He wore dark jeans and a dark peaked cap and spoke partly German and partly Russian.
