After Michaela Polleres (in Tashkent), Wachid Borchashvili (Tbilisi), Aaron Fara won the third Austrian Grand Slam title in this – still quite young – year in Antalya yesterday. In the final of the class up to 100 kilograms, the Lower Austrian made short work of the Swiss Daniel Eich, thundering him into the mat after just 28 seconds with a lifting technique.
Three different Grand Slam winners in one calendar year are a novelty for Austria’s judo and prove that the top has become broader. A little over two years ago, the association (ÖJV) moved its federal base to Linz and at the same time partially centralized it.
The most recent successes confirm the work there around head coach Yvonne Bönisch. The top form comes at the right time: The World Championships in Doha will follow on May 7th and from May 25th to 27th a Grand Prix will take place in Linz for the first time.
