There are also differences in the federal states: In Vorarlberg, campers have to spend significantly more money for a night on a campsite than in Vienna. In the former, the average price for two people who want to sleep one night in the high season – including pitch, caravan, electricity and local tax – is 36.52 euros, while in Vienna it is 12.02 euros less – there are for the same service requires an average of 24.50 euros. In Upper Austria, the prices are comparatively low, campsite operators charge an average of 28.70 euros here. Only Styria and Vienna are cheaper.
Compared to the previous year, prices have risen by almost three percent, according to the camping portal camping.info. It’s not just inflation that’s to blame, says the managing director of the portal, Maximilian Möhrle. The increased demand and the higher quality of the campsites also explain the slight price increase.
The prices for overnight stays are usually adjusted daily to occupancy and demand. “Anyone who wants to secure their stand at the best price-performance ratio should book now at the latest,” says Möhrle. Spontaneous travelers must reckon with higher prices or even fully booked seats.
More and more camping nights
The number of camping overnight stays in Austria has been increasing continuously since 2015 – only in the Corona year 2020 was there a slump. Last year, people stayed almost 8 million times at a local campsite. The number rose by 23.1 percent compared to 2021. That is also nine percent more than in 2019, the year before the pandemic.
The most expensive and cheapest camping destinations in Europe
The price-performance ratio is excellent in this country, says Möhrle. In Europe, the domestic campsites are in fifth place with their prices per night – after Switzerland (38.01 euros), Italy (37.89 euros), Croatia (37.38 euros) and Spain (33.44 euros). In Albania, campers pay the least – a night there costs an average of just 13.05 euros. North Macedonia (14.20 euros) and Turkey (14.59 euros) also charge less than 15 euros for an overnight stay.
Four Austrian campsites are among the top ten in Europe. “Camping Grubhofer” in St. Martin near Lofer (Salzburg) is even in second place. The best Upper Austrian campsite is “Camp MondSeeLand” in Tiefgraben near Mondsee. It ranks fifth in Europe and third in Austria, directly following “Camping Sonnenland” in Lutzmannsburg (Burgenland).
