After five months in power, Peru’s Congress will decide tomorrow whether or not President Dina Boluarte will be removed from office. Left-wing groups promoted this vote since They consider her to be “morally incapable” to lead the government after the successive and bloody repressions that took place after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo that left more than 60 dead.
In any case, it is expected that the leftists do not gather the necessary number of votes to remove Dina Boluarte from power. They need a minimum of 52 votes for the proposal to be debated in the venue and at the moment they only add up to around 40.
Parliament confirmed on Monday that the “vacancy motion” is included in the agenda for tomorrow’s sessionwhich also provides for an interpellation to the Minister of Defense.
The head of Congress, retired General José Williams, tried to calm the tension and tacitly assured that this is not the time for changes given the political crisis that the South American country is going through: “I think that a vacancy attempt at this time is not appropriate, it is not adequate“.
If the initiative is approved, Congress would summon Boluarte next week to defend himself before legislators.
The request was presented on March 22 by Peru Libre, the Magisterial Bloc of National Coordination, Cambio Democrático-Juntos por el Perú, Somos Perú and some independent deputies.
All these blocs were allied with former President Pedro Castillo, who was dismissed by Congress on December 7 after the then president announced the closure of the Legislature. In that context, Assumed the leadership of Peru, its then vice president, Dina Boluarte.
The left “proposes that the Congress of the Republic declare the permanent moral incapacity of the President of the Republic, according to article 113 of the Political Constitution of PeruIn addition, “it proposes declaring the vacancy of the Presidency” and applying the succession by placing in office whoever is in charge of Congress at that time.
It is the first impeachment request against him in Congress, while his predecessor faced three.
