Germany also plans to ban ChatGPT for data theft

The government is considering banning the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI due to the dangers related to sensitive user information.

ChatGPTthe chatbot that solves problems through artificial intelligenceis looked askance for a possible case of “pishing”, that is, the theft of sensitive data on the Internet, specifically to access user accounts or bank details.

Last week, ChatGPT disclosed sensitive data such as first and last name, email address associated with the payment, the last four digits of the credit card and the expiration date.

It all started when Reddit and Twitter users revealed the chatbot flaw: in their question history Queries made by other users appeared, in some cases in other languages. As confirmed by OpenAI in a statement, all this caused the ChatGPT service to be suspended for a while until the bug was corrected. Service was restored some time later.

The first country to ban the development of ChatGPT was Italy: the Government banned the OpenAI tool for violating the GPDP rules (Guarantor for the Protection of Data Personal), within the framework of an alleged illegal collection of sensitive information from users.

Does Germany join the ChatGPT ban?

Ulrich Kelber, the German Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Informationnoted that “in principle, such an action is also possible in Germany” and said that Germany contacted the Italian government to obtain more information about the fact.

From Ireland they also noted “follow up with the Italian regulator to understand the basis for their action and we will coordinate with all EU data protection authorities in relation to this matter.”
