The import of electrical energy in March was a record in the last 17 years

Uruguay reached his largest import of electricity in the last 17 years in March, which was also the second consecutive month where more than a quarter of the national energy demand came from Brazil.

The import of energy from the neighboring country is justified mainly by two factors, the short-term needs due to the impact of the drought and the favorable purchase prices offered by the South American giant, according to the consultancy SEG Engineering.

Of the 1,092 GWh demanded in March, 333 GWh were imported from Brazil, practically in its entirety, with a minimum participation of Argentina. On the other hand, some 46 GWh were exported to Argentina.

For his part, Uruguay generated 810 GWh of electricity. In the breakdown, 364 GWh were contributed by wind power; 203 GWh for thermal energy; 128 GWh for hydropower; 78 GWh for biomass; and 36.4 GWh through solar energy.

This implies a total of 45% wind power, 25.1% thermal energy, 15.9% hydraulic energy, 9.6% biomass, and 4.5% solar energy. In turn, there was a generation consumption of 5 GWh.

The contribution of renewable energies to the generation matrix was of 74.9%where wind energy accumulated the mark of six consecutive months, being the main source of electricity production in the country, according to data from joint venture.

Uruguay will pay $120 per MWh from Brazil during April

Uruguay will pay Brazil $120 per MWh in the coming days, after a marked rise in prices of exportable energy from the South American giant. During much of February, UTE had paid the MWh at 58 dollars, however, this had already had a rise in its price to 92 dollars during the month of March.

Despite this rise in Brazilian energy, UTE continues to look favorably on its purchase, since the cost of generating thermal energy at the Batlle Power Plant is in the order of $150, and $247 at the Punta Power Plant. del Tigre, in the department of Saint Joseph.
