After a fire with two bodies discovered in an outbuilding of a farm in Deutschfeistritz north of Graz, the police have clarified the cause: A farewell message was found in the home of the two missing persons. Accordingly, the 44-year-old son probably set the fire himself because he and his 74-year-old mother were apparently overwhelmed with her serious illness and the living conditions, according to a broadcast from the state police department on Thursday.
Discovered by accident
On Wednesday night, one of several outbuildings of the remote property went up in flames. The crew of a rescue helicopter accidentally discovered the fire during an overflight. When the fire brigade arrived, the building could no longer be saved. It was completely burned down. The two bodies were then discovered in the rubble. Since the 74-year-old reported in the apartment building and her son were nowhere to be found, it was quickly assumed that these were the human remains of the two.
The ORF Styria reports on site:
DNA comparisons are pending
Investigators eventually discovered the farewell message in the home of the two. “Accordingly, based on the evidence, it can now be assumed with a probability bordering on certainty that the fire was started by the 44-year-old himself,” said the police. The exact cause of death of the two could not be completely clarified during an autopsy. Further investigations are to show whether they died of carbon monoxide poisoning. DNA comparisons are also still pending to determine the ultimate clarification of identity. Based on the investigations so far, however, it can be assumed that the bodies are the 44-year-old and his mother.
