The garden year is progressing, but flowering is very different this year and has been slowed down by the cold. Sometimes the chestnuts are already beginning to unfold their leaves, the cherries and also the pear trees are beginning to bloom.
This is what to do in the garden now:
- The first lawn mowing is coming up. Do not mow too short – level 3-4 is the right setting, i.e. 3-4 centimetres. If you have not yet fertilized, fertilize immediately after mowing. Overseeding is now possible. Possibly loosen the soil, work in compost and quartz sand. Keep well moist.
- Fertilize rhododendrons! A first fertilization should be given 4 to 6 weeks before flowering, and a second immediately after flowering.
- Spread compost where it hasn’t already been done.
- Oleanders, palms, laurels and other robust potted plants can be placed outdoors. Even the individual snow showers no longer harm these plants. However, citrus, fuchsias and daisies still need to be protected.
- Tomatoes and cucumbers – these particularly heat-loving plants – should only be placed outside after the ice saints. The same goes for basil.
