In a company-wide memo, Ruth Porat, chief financial officer of Google’s parent company Alphabet, announced that there would be cost-cutting measures that would also affect the workforce.
The document, which was reported by the CNBC broadcaster, talks, among other things, about changes to the perks that have been available to employees so far. Among other things, the “excessive production of muffins, inappropriate dates for yoga classes and empty shuttle buses” are criticized. Google wants to streamline its processes in order to achieve long-term sustainable cost savings, it says.
Longer cycles for notebooks
The company also wants to adapt cafes, tea kitchens and other facilities to reduce food waste and protect the environment. This is also related to the hybrid work week, writes Porat.
Equipment is also saved. Notebooks are replaced less frequently because they are more powerful than they used to be. Because of the slump in the tech industry, Google had separated from 12,000 employees in early 2023. Around 190,000 people work in the Alphabet Group.
