After the last four defeats in a row, coach Thomas Silberberger’s team celebrated a clear 4-0 (3-0) home win against Wolfsberger AC on Friday evening. Thomas Sabitzer scored the second fastest goal in Bundesliga history after twelve seconds.
The Czech Patrik Jezek scored after just ten seconds in July 2007 in the duel between Red Bull Salzburg and Altach. The other goals for the Watteners were scored by Felix Bacher (19′), Julius Ertlthaler (23′) and Raffael Behounek (91′). In the qualifying group table, WSG has 17 points ahead of Austria Lustenau (16), who will face Altach in the Ländle derby on Saturday. The WAC remains in third place with 13 points, the lead over the bottom of the table is four points before the basement duel between Ried and Hartberg.
First-choice goalkeeper Ferdinand Oswald was unable to play for the WSG due to back problems. He was replaced by 23-year-old Benjamin Ozegovic. Sabitzer was joined again in attack by the Swede Tim Prica. On the WAC side, Matteo Anzolin replaced the sick Jonathan Scherzer in the starting XI.
Disastrous pass from goalie Bonmann
The spectators in the Tivoli Stadium were able to celebrate the first goal after just twelve seconds in the top game of the qualifying group. After the kick-off, WAC played the ball back to goalie Hendrik Bonmann, whose disastrous pass landed in Sabitzer’s feet. The WSG attacker then sank the ball in the far corner after a simple one-two with strike partner Prica. The guests initially shook off the initial shock well and almost equalized with a shot from Adis Jasic (10′).
Then the locals took the reins and rolled over the WAC. After a corner kick, Bacher headed in completely unchallenged (19′). Only a short time later, Ertlthaler increased the lead to 3:0 (23rd) after a low cross from Prica. The Carinthians were completely off the roll and barely got out of their own half. The WSG continued to create good opportunities until the break whistle, but no longer wanted to score. Sabitzer narrowly missed a free-kick cross (32′), Prica failed with a long-range shot (39′).
After the change of sides, the WAC got into the game a little better, but the attacks were only conditionally compelling. A shot by Matthäus Taferner from the edge of the penalty area went over the goal (62′). Konstantin Kerschbaumer forced WSG goalkeeper Ozegovic to defend with his feet (72′). The Watteners did not allow more than these half-chances on the defensive. Offensively, a header from Behounek (61′) and a shot from Prica missed the goal (69′). In the final phase, WSG shifted down a gear, Behounek scored the fourth goal in added time after a corner kick (91st).
