The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported today that they placed more than 6,000 anti-tank mines and seven kilometers of trenches to reinforce the country’s defensive line on the border with Belarus, an ally of Russia.

“The expansion of the barriers in the border areas with Belarus continues to advance” with the installation of minefields in areas accessible by tanks or routes that “the enemy could use to enter the country,” reported the commander of the joint forces of the Ukrainian Army, Sergei Nayev, according to the Europa Press news agency.

Nayev added that the new minefields placed on the border already number in the “tens”, a month after the announcement of the operations to reinforce the border.

“Just last week, 6,000 anti-tank mines were activated. Our soldiers are working against the clock, despite the weather,” the military chief added in a statement posted on the Defense Ministry’s Facebook page.

The tension between the two countries has grown in recent weeks, specifically since Belarus announced an agreement with Russia for the deployment of strategic weapons and after noticing the presence of some 17,000 Ukrainian soldiers in the vicinity of the border between the two countries.

Belarusian forces also began operations to reinforce the border and build new defenses, as well as engineering structures and a second line of trenches and anti-tank concrete tetrahedrons.
