Peru exceeds 200,000 deaths from coronavirus

Despite the high death toll, the health ministry assured that there is a decrease compared to previous weeks and recalled that there was even one day, on September 29, without deaths from Covid-19 in the capital Lima.

Due to population density, Metropolitan Lima was the most affected by the pandemic, since 40% of the deaths registered in the country occurred in this jurisdiction; well ahead of Piura (6%), La Libertad (5%), Callao (4.9%) and Arequipa (4.8%), reported local newspaper El Comercio.

Last month, the Ministry of Health estimated that in a possible third wave of infections, deaths would be reduced to almost half of those calculated in a previous forecast due to the progress of the immunization campaign.

“With the advance of vaccination, the forecast allows that figure to be much lower now. For this reason, it is important to continue promoting the vaccination process, ”said the Minister of Health, Hernando Cevallos, during his presentation in the Congress of the Republic.

Peru, one of the countries with the highest mortality rate in the world due to the pandemic, began to apply a third booster dose to health personnel and plans to continue that campaign with the vulnerable population such as those over 65 years of age and with comorbidities.

This week, the health portfolio revealed that about 60% of the eligible population is already fully vaccinated against the coronavirus and announced that from the first week of November it will begin to immunize minors between 12 and 17 years of age.
