Stuffed animals and candles stood next to a house entrance in Hockenheim near Heidelberg on Easter Monday and reminded of two children who are said to have fallen victim to a crime: the evening before, the police and public prosecutor informed the public that the seven and nine-year-old siblings, according to initial findings were killed. The investigators arrested a 43-year-old at the scene on suspicion of a homicide.

The arrested 43-year-old is the mother, the “Bild” newspaper reported online on Monday, citing Mannheim’s chief public prosecutor Andreas Grossmann and quoting him with the words: “She also informed the police herself. More about the motive and The course of events is still being determined.” In the report from the investigators on Sunday evening, only one relative was mentioned. The children’s bodies were found in an apartment.

The children’s bodies are autopsied

The police pointed out that further information from the authorities should not be available until Tuesday – the public prosecutor’s office and the police wanted to coordinate. Among other things, the questions remain open as to whether the woman has already commented on what happened, who lived in the apartment and where the children’s father was at the time of the crime. It was also unclear how the children – according to “Bild” they are brothers – died and whether the allegations against the woman were murder, manslaughter or, for example, another crime resulting in death.

The bodies of the siblings are to be autopsied this Tuesday, as a police spokesman said on Sunday evening. The statement also said that the public prosecutor’s office in Mannheim and the department for capital crimes of the Criminal Police Office in Mannheim had started further investigations into the 43-year-old. The Central Forensic Science Department of the Heidelberg Criminal Police Department and the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University of Heidelberg are also involved.
