France could modify work for women with painful periods

France has several bills underway to agree sick leave to women suffering painful periodsa few months after Spain adopted a similar measure.

Some French companies already offer the possibility of taking paid leave by painful periods, like the furniture manufacturer Louis Design.

And the municipality of Saint-Ouen, near Paris, has recently offered menstrual leave to their employees suffering from pain or endometriosis.

“It is not necessary to stay in individual initiatives, this system must be generalized for all those who need it”said the environmentalist deputy Sébastien Peytavie.

Together with the deputies of her party Marie-Charlotte Garin and Sandrine Rousseau, she launched a consultation on the subject with feminist associations and representatives of the medical and business world.

The objective is to develop a bill to create an indemnified menstrual leave, respecting the medical secret. Meanwhile, it is planned to present the text on May 26.

“It is the opportune moment to make this bill in France, the interest in the subject is very strong, the population is ready,” declared the deputy Fatiha Keloua Hachi, who hopes to present the text “as soon as possible.”

According to Aline Boeuf, a doctoral candidate at the University of Geneva, this issue is still not fully accepted in the world of work.

“Women’s experiences, such as menstruation, pregnancy or menopause, are still not taken into account by employers,” he says. According to her, in addition to the menstrual leave, the life of women in companies could improve by putting bins in the toilets or rest areas.

Limitations on job changes

This measure could cause “disorganization” in small businessesaccording to the French confederation of SMEs (CPME).

In addition, “not all women experience this period of menstruation in the same way, and those who need it can request a leave” to a doctor, says the vice president of CPME, Stéphanie Pauzat.

feminist stance

The employers’ organization Medef opposes menstrual loss because “it would convey the image that women cannot occupy the same positions as men.”

Feminist organizations also fear a possible negative reaction. In fact, they consider that this could lead to the discrimination against women in hiring.
