A family from the Hallein district took advantage of the sunny holiday weather to take a trip to the Salzkammergut. Three children aged three, six and eight hiked along the Ostuferweg together with their parents and grandparents. They started at the lido in Obertraun and their destination was the train station in Hallstatt. There was a rock face right next to the hiking trail, which the six-year-old boy and his 62-year-old grandfather climbed. The fatal accident happened around 4 p.m.
“It was bad luck”
A stone came loose at a height of around five meters, causing the 62-year-old to fall. The man hit the trail, right in front of his family, and suffered serious injuries to his upper body in the fall. “It was bad luck,” said the police press office in the evening. After the first aid by the family members, the Salzburger was flown by the emergency helicopter to a hospital in Salzburg. The scene of the accident could not be reached with the ambulance, which is why the helicopter came to the rescue with a rope. The six-year-old boy was lucky: he was unharmed.
