Welser citizen participation project FreiRaum starts again at the slaughterhouse area
Ralf Drack, Brigitte Knoll, chairwoman Monika Weichselbaumer and Florian Schedlberger invite you to the new FreiRaum.

After the club moved out of the bar in Altstadt 8, which could no longer be financed, the club members can continue where they left off: “We remain open and addressed to everyone and are independent of parties,” emphasizes Ralf Drack, deputy chairwoman of the FreiSpace and municipal council of the Greens. The association no longer has to struggle with raising money, because the premises, which have been equipped with a new kitchenette, children’s corner, projector and sound system as well as seating for 30 people, are available free of charge.

New radio nest and association for single parents

The rooms are used by the artists’ wall, core zone (church youth work), Welser Radler, a philosophical cafe, environmental regulars’ table, Attac, and Politik-im-Blick. The “Radionest” is new to the range. There, low-threshold access to the medium of radio is made possible. It is operated by Marina Wetzlmair, who works for Freies Rundfunk OÖ, Radio FRO.
“We also want to appeal to young people via the Schl8hof and with the core zone as a player,” says Drack. In December, together with others, he also founded the association RHEA, Regional Help for Single Parents, which will hold its monthly meetings here. The aim is to create self-help structures for single parents.

Some who have used the FreiRaum offer so far still have to be convinced. They have concerns about the substitution center for drug sufferers at the entrance to the slaughterhouse area and the problem of alcoholism (there were problems especially during Corona), which, however, was countered with a ban on alcohol on the site . According to Drack, there are plans to convert the rear area of the site, the former youth center D22 is dilapidated and has to be removed. So, in two or three years, new spaces could also be created for the FreiRaum, provided the offer is well received.

The FreiRaum will open on Sunday, April 16th at 10 a.m. with a brunch, there will be free flower seeds, a wild herb tasting and a picture exhibition by Agnes Schedlberger. At 3 p.m. there will be a discussion on “What should and can a FreiRaum in Wels do?”
