Banks’ post responded to news that the 63-year-old pediatrician had become the first woman to receive the title of four-star officer.

Twitter explained that Banks’ comment violated its hateful behavior policy, which prohibits “targeted gender discrimination or imitation of transgender people,” and temporarily blocked his account yesterday, after informing that it would regain access by deleting the tweet.

Banks then chose to denounce his suspension on his personal account, where he argued that he was punished for “publishing a statement of fact,” according to the NBC news network.

“I will not back down,” Banks wrote, announcing, “I will post to my personal account for now.”

America’s highest-ranking transgender official, Levine, became the nation’s first openly transgender four-star officer last Tuesday.

“This is a momentous occasion and I am honored to take on this role because of the impact it can have and the historical nature of what it symbolizes,” Levine said in a speech at her swearing-in ceremony.
