The price of exports increased by 4.6% in February

The latest report from the Uruguayan Chamber of Industries (CIU) recorded a slight increase in the Export Price Index (IPE) for goods, but not in the industrial sector.

He Export Price Index (IPE) of goods in dollars grew 5.1% in February compared to the previous month, while in year-on-year terms the increase was 4.6%, according to the latest report from the Chamber of Industries of Uruguay (CIU).

In a context of exports that, although it shows some drops compared to 2022 —as it was a record year for placements abroad by the country—, it continues to give good news in general —the most recent is the growth in the turnover of dairy exports—; the CIU reported on the IPE and the numbers were mostly positive.

In this sense, regarding goods in dollars in the economy, the indicator saw an increase of 5.1% during February compared to January, while the relationship with the same period in 2022 showed an increase of 4.6%. A little different was the performance in the industrial sectorspecifically, where the month-on-month comparison grew just 0.7% in dollars, but fell 4% year-on-year.

In any case, export prices remain at historically high levelsaccording to the Chamber.

How was the IPE according to the item?

According to the CIU report, the item Food, Beverages and Tobacco It increased by 1.7% in terms of the price of its exports in the monthly comparison, while it registered a decrease of 6.3% in relation to February 2022. The frozen beef boneless was the product with the greatest negative impact on the prices of external sales of the group, in line with the general market.

The prices of external sales of Textile, Clothing and Leather, in turn, decreased by 1.1% compared to January, while they registered a decrease of 9.2% in the interannual comparison. In this category were whole hides and skins without dividing those that had a greater negative impact on the export prices of the category.

The sector of chemicals and Plastics showed, for its part, a decrease in export prices in February compared to January of 1.4%. On the contrary, in year-on-year terms it increased by 5.4%, explained by the increase in the prices of pipes and pipe fittings.
