As the BBC reported on Thursday, the documents suggested close surveillance of the 73-year-old Portuguese, during which conversations with his deputy Amina Mohammed were overheard.

The papers also show that the United States considers Guterres’ behavior towards Russia to be too soft in view of the Ukraine war.

“The need to respect the integrity of UN communications applies to all member states,” Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in New York. He regretted that private conversations were “distorted and made public”. But the Secretary General has been a public figure for some time. “So he is not surprised by the fact that people are spying on him and listening to his private conversations.”

It is an open secret that the United Nations, especially at its headquarters in New York or at its headquarters in Geneva, are constantly being subjected to attempts at espionage by some member states. Being based in the USA should make it easier for American authorities to obtain secret information. But accusations of espionage are also repeatedly made against Russia and China.
