91% of the energy generated in 2022 was from renewable sources

The MIEM published the Preliminary Energy Balance that establishes a drop in consumption of 2% over the past year.

He Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) published a report on the generation, consumption, import and export of electrical energy in 2022 where there was a reduction in 8% electric power generation as well as a 50% drop in exports, although he highlighted the 91% electricity generation from renewable sources.

The National Directorate of MIEM published the Preliminary Energy Balance that allows to anticipate the results of the complete report of the National Energy Balance (BEN) which is published in the middle of the year. One of the most important data provided by the report was that electricity generation in 2022 was 8% lower than in 2021, although energy consumption rose by 2%.

Regarding the import of energy, it was the same in both 2022 and 2021. However, in the field of exports, there was a 50% drop compared to 2021, reaching similar levels of recent years with 10% of total generation. Between the years 2019 and 2021, the export was higher, reaching numbers between 19% and 18%, respectively.

Electricity production with renewable sources

The positive thing about the report is that, of the total generated, 91% was represented by renewable energy such as waterwith a 39% of participation. This is followed by wind with a 32%, and energy production through biomass with a 17%

Regarding electricity generation through fossil fuelswas reduced to 9%, compared to 2021 where it reached 15%. This was also due to the fact that, in 2021, more energy was exported to Brazil.

Primary matrix and CO2 generation

Refering to primary matrixthe participation of fossil fuels was 43%, reaching a growth of 2%, compared to 2021 and in percentage participation grew by 1%. This is followed by biomass in the primary matrix with 39%, energy from hydroelectricity with 9% and electricity from wind power with 7%. In last place are solar and natural gas with 1% each.

The report includes the CO2 emission factor of the National Interconnected System (SIN). During the year 2022, the generation of carbon dioxide was 71 Gg of CO2 per GWh of electricity generated and delivered to the grid. The good news is that it was reduced by a 30% compared to 2021, although it continues at one of the highest levels in recent years.
