However, the numbers could rise again in the spring/summer season, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warned on Friday.
Most of the new cases were found in men (98.1%) between the ages of 18 and 40 (64.6%) – “mainly in men who have sex with men,” the ECDC wrote. The weekly number of cases reported in the EU peaked in July 2022. Since then, a steady downward trend has been observed, which has plateaued with very low numbers since the end of December 2022.
“The number of cases has fallen sharply since the peak in July last year,” said Andrea Ammon, ECDC Director. However, there is a risk that cases will rise again in the coming spring and summer season due to celebrations and increased holiday travel.
The ECDC recommended thorough monitoring and contact tracing of those who fell ill. She also referred to the possibility of being vaccinated against monkeypox. By March 3, 2023, more than 300,000 vaccine doses had been administered throughout the EU/EEA.
