The campaign to repeal 135 articles of a key law of Lacalle Pou began in Uruguay

In July, the necessary number of signatures was reached for the regulation in question to be put up for discussion in a referendum promoted by social, union, feminist and environmental organizations, mostly opponents.

President Lacalle Pou defends the LUC as “just and necessary” and the pro-government sectors assure that the opposition uses it as a referendum against the government and raises the alarm that a possible repeal would lead to “release prisoners.”

“Pepe” Mujica said that the executive “exaggerates a lot” and makes a “kind of verbal terrorism” when he defends the LUC and questions those who intend to repeal it.

During the event, the organizers reported that, according to the latest official report from the Electoral Court on the verification process of the almost 800,000 signatures delivered -on Friday-, 515,299 rubrics have been controlled, of which 474,117 have been validated.

“This confirms that the 671,544 valid signatures necessary for the referendum to be officially called will be easily exceeded,” they stressed.

Among the first reasons for repealing the LUC, the proclamation noted that that law “goes against norms and institutions, democratic and social conquests, forged by our grandparents and grandmothers, who have been fundamental for the implementation of public policies in our country that contributed to the affirmation of democracy and freedoms, social inclusion, equal opportunities and the protection of the most vulnerable sectors ” .

The LUC unleashes the rejection of the entire opposition arc. Among the organizations that collected the signatures were, the Federation of Uruguayan University Students (FEUU), the Feminist Intersocial, the Broad Front, the Association of Social Assistants of Uruguay (ADASU), and Intersocials of the provinces of Salto, Carmelo, Rivera , Soriano, Artigas, Costa de Oro, Tacuarembó, Paysandú, Treinta y Tres and Fray Bentos, and Mothers and Relatives of Detained-Disappeared.
