“You just have to play that at home,” said Blue and White Linz coach Gerald Scheiblehner. By the 90th minute, his team had led 2-1 away against Liefering in the second division, but only took one point from Salzburg – 2-2.
Scheiblehner had given eight wins as a route for promotion, in the 87th minute Tobias Koch kept Linz on course with the goal to make it 2-1. He scored after goalkeeper Jonas Krumrey failed to capture Danilo Mitrovic’s shot.
However, according to Scheiblehner, “unnecessary loss of ball when playing out” invited Elias Havel to equalize (90′).
The 2:2 put a spanner in the works for the title, but in the end it was the performance-based result. In the first half, Ronivaldo Blau-Weiss put Linz in the lead with his 13th goal of the season (20′), after the break Liefering set a pace that Linz could not keep up. Raphael Hofer scored to make it 1-1 (58th). Linz only had chances on the counterattack, but it was still 2-1. It wasn’t enough to win.
One hope in the title race is the early return of Matthias Seidl. With twelve goals, the second-best goalscorer in Blau-Weiss Linz returned to training after his syndesmosis ligament injury.
