UTE launched a Renewable Energy Certificate on the blockchain

UTE launched a Renewable Energy Certificate on the blockchain

The state energy company advances in the decarbonization of the economy with an innovative presentation of certificates that recognize the use of renewable energies for national production.

The National Administration of Electric Power Plants and Transmissions (UTE) threw the Renewable Energy Certificates (CER) for projects based on blockchain, being a pioneer in the introduction of this technology in Uruguay, as well as in the transparency of renewable energy.

UTE took another step in the conversion of the country’s energy matrix and the decarbonization of the economy with the new System of Certificates in electronic format for the recognition and accreditation of national production with renewable energy. These CERs ensure that a certain number of megawatt-hours of electrical energy, produced in a period, have been generated from renewable sources.

A new computer system

The novelty, in addition to the certificates themselves, also includes the development of a computer system by UTE, supported by the blockchain for the implementation and administration of the system National Certification System (SCER). It is one of the first implementations of blockchain on a massive scale in the country, so the state energy company also becomes a pioneer in this regard.

In this way, the use of the cryptographic technology facilitates the traceability and guarantees the transparency required by companies registered in the system, to have certificates linked to the use of renewable energy that they actually consume.

For the generation of these certificates in Uruguay, the Electricity Market Administration (ADME) and the agents and participants of the Wholesale Electricity Market (MMEE) send information from each operational center to the National Energy Directorate (DNE) of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), who is the administrator of the Certification System. UTE, for its part, provides data on the consumption of end customers.

Through this information system, every organization adhering to SCER obtains its certificate, in which it will be recorded from which generating plant the consumption that it used for the production of products or the delivery of services arose.

So far, CERs have been assigned to 131 electrical supplies corresponding to 81 companies. Likewise, the request for these certificates has no cost for the companies that require it and those of 2022 are already available for download.

Although currently the generation of Renewable Energy Certificates are aimed at Medium and Large Consumers installed in the country, the energy company plans to extend the certification to other types of UTE customers, non-residential, in the course of this year .
