The ex-president Jose “Pepe” Mujica participated in a campaign event of the Paraguayan opposition, the National Concertation coalition, and showed their support for the candidate Ephraim Alegrefrom the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, who will be a candidate for the third time and this time will face the official Santiago Peña, and 11 other candidates who appear on the ballot.

“You have to fight for society because our life passes, but the people remain. And the people are the children that are in the bowels of our beloved women. Those who are going to come after us,” said Mujica from a theater full of young supporters of the presidential candidate in the town of Villa Elisa, a neighbor of Santiago.

The ex-president and the Paraguayan opposition candidate appeared on a stage more than two hours after what was scheduled at an electoral campaign event, organized by the opposition alliance National Agreement.

Mujica, who held a meeting with Alegre in Uruguay last November, gave a speech lasting almost an hour in which he stressed the importance of unity to “achieve” changes.

“We have to learn to care for unity. Unity must be respected as a supreme value”, he added. He added that the people must learn to tolerate each other in a world that is not perfect. “We have to learn that you don’t win people over by insulting,” he said.

Mujica recalled his beginnings as a militant

The ex-governor recalled his beginnings as political militant at age 14in a country where, he said, the left was “very traditional.”
