“I don’t think Honda really supports me. I feel like I’m not being used properly.” Even before the MotoGP Grand Prix in Austin, Alex Rins had complained about his new employer, after the weekend on the Circuit of The Americas the world should look very different for the Spaniard.
After finishing second behind defending champion Francesco Bagnaia in Saturday’s sprint, the 27-year-old, who switched to Honda after the Suzuki retirement, went one better and won the main race.
He was breathing down the neck of world champion Bagnaia so much that he slipped on his Ducati on lap eight while he was in the lead. After the premature exit in Argentina, the Italian’s next blunder, which could still take revenge during the World Cup.
Rins ended up winning ahead of Luca Marini (Ducati) and ex-champion Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha). Sixth-placed Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati) is now eleven points ahead of Bagnaia in the overall standings, while Rins is third and just 17 points behind.
For KTM, still victorious in Moto2 thanks to Pedro Acosta, the race in the premier class ended in a debacle. Jack Miller slipped away in third place on lap seven, and Brad Binder got the same a little later. He was able to continue, but was 13th and last.
