John Kirby, White House spokesman for national security, said that Lula’s comments were “simply wrong”.
The Brazilian president again proposed on Sunday the creation of a group of countries not involved in the war between Russia and Ukraine to mediate for peace, stating that he had discussed the matter with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinpingearlier this week.

“I think we have to sit at a table and say: ‘enough, let’s start talking’because the war has never brought and will never bring any benefit to humanity,” said Lula, who has been critical of the United States and the European Union for their role in the conflict.
Previously, the head of state of Brazil had said that the group of mediators should bring together countries that do not “encourage” the waradding that arms-supplying nations had to be convinced to stop doing so.
The United States and the European Union have been supplying weapons and other aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country neighbor over a year ago. Germany reportedly asked Brazil earlier this year to also supply weapons, but Lula refused.
Lula repeated that the decision to start the war was “taken by two countries”, seeming to blame Ukraine as well, adding that ending the war will be more difficult as more nations will have to be persuaded.
“We are trying to form a group of countries that have no involvement in the war to talk with Russia and Ukraine, but also with the United States and the EU, to convince people that peace is the best way to establish a conversation process,” said Lula.

The Russian foreign minister arrived in Brazil
The Russian Foreign Minister, Serguei Lavrov, “thanked” today for Brazil’s efforts to end the war in Ukraineupon arriving in the South American country to meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who seeks to mediate in the conflict with China.
“We are interested in ending the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible,” Lavrov said at a joint press conference with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira, before his interview with Lula.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Foreign Minister reiterated that his country wants guarantees that Ukraine does not become a threat to Russia’s security, as well as protecting the lives and rights of the Russian-speaking population in eastern and southern Ukraine.
Lula returned to Brazil yesterday after a visit to China, an ally of Russia, where he accused the United States and Europe of prolonging the conflict with their arms deliveries to Ukraine and said that it is necessary to force Moscow and Kiev to negotiate and end war.
