OSE President, Raul Monteroannounced the extension of the call for bids for the construction of the water treatment plant Arazati which was scheduled for May 5 and will be held on June 6 at the request of the companies interested in the project.

According to Montero, the companies that plan to invest in the plant have asked for more time to better study the project. Something that, according to the president of OSE “is nothing more than an indicator of the interest that companies have in building there.” The project consists of the construction of a water intake and a purification plant on the Silver river in the department of Saint Josephin the area of Arazati.

However, the construction plan for the plant generated rejection by institutions, political parties and even municipalities. For example, the director of OSE for the broad front, Edgardo OrtunoHe was against it, stating that the construction will cost 300 million dollars plus private companies, something that could be avoided by hiring the state.

For his part, he PIT-CNT, along with 30 other non-governmental organizations, mobilized a month ago in Montevideo, denouncing the lack of policies in the sector at a time of extreme drought. The mobilization also received the support of the Frente Amplio opposition party, which blamed official policies, including budget cuts that, it says, postponed works on reservoirs and other sources of the vital liquid, and that led to the Administration of State Sanitary Works (OSE) at their lowest investment levels.

The Municipality of Montevideo also declared itself against it and filed an appeal for revocation arguing that the construction of the plant violated the article 47 of the Constitutionwhich states that the environmental Protection It is of general interest and qualifies water as “an essential natural resource for life.” However, the OSE board rejected the initiative of Carolina Cosse’s mayor.
