The Senate approved the law that allows couples to be absent from work for pregnancy controls

He Senate today approved a bill drafted by Colorado representative Sebastian Sanguinetti which grants pregnant people and their partners the right to be absent from work in order to attend routine check-ups related to pregnancies.

According to the document, “Every pregnant person will have the right to be absent up to four hours a month from work to attend pregnancy check-ups.“and” all workers, both in private and public activities, will also “have the right to be absent from their workplace, up to four hours a month, for the purpose of accompanying their spouse, domestic partner or partner to the pregnancy controls and corresponding routines”.

To access the benefit, and for these hours to be counted as worked, a certificate containing a signature and seal of a doctor must be presented, as well as the data related to the control. Certified hours may not be deducted from salary.

The project clarifies that “whoever uses the benefit must notify their employer at least two days in advance and cannot be denied under any circumstances.”

The bill was approved unanimously in the Senate.

The law was approved unanimously with 26 votes out of 26 possible in the Upper House, and must be sent to the Executive power. Prior to the vote, the Vice President of the Republic, Beatriz Argimon assured in the session that “fortunately not all of us consider maternity as a burden, and this is one investment, no place to doubts, for the country“.

The approval of the bill was celebrated by the PC, especially by the Batllista wing, the most progressive of the traditional party. Sebastián Sanguinetti himself described the vote as “excellent news” and “a great victory for the health and well-being of families in our country.”
