At the event “Value chains as a driver of transition” of the BBVA bank, the president Luis Lacalle Pou re-emphasized the importance of having a “sustainability” in public policies who carries on the Uruguay.
It is a flag that he had previously raised, in his speech at the last Ibero-American Summit in the Dominican Republic on March 25, when he recalled that the term does not apply only to environmental issues.
In this case, he once again ratified his position on this and in the BBVA forum, stated that for there to be sustainability in the environment, “there must be sustainability of public policies”.
The green bond and the possibility of achieving a loan tied to environmental goals
In his speech, the president spoke about the bond indexed to indicators of sustainability and climate crisis issued by the country last year, which it described as “the first of its kind in the world”. At the same event, the Minister of Economy lily arbeleche announced that the government is working to agree on a world bank loan to the country whose interests are tied to the fulfillment of the environmental goals of the Uruguay.
In his presentation, the Head of State maintained: “That is what catalyzes public policies. It catalyzes and promotes them, because all this that we are trying to do internally, if you turn around and to finance yourself you do not get incentives to improve your behaviors, if it doesn’t matter comply with the goals set in the Paris Agreement that not fulfill them, there is no stimulus Neither for society nor for the government.
“What is the support of public policies? We almost repeat like parrots: the institutionality, the republic and democracy,” he pointed out. He added that without it, an event like the forum could not take place because no private investor would bet on the country.
“Why do they do it? Because Uruguay ensured, ensures and will ensure the continuity, sustainability of the laws, contracts, the separation of powers, democracy, after all, the republic,” the president emphasized.
On the other hand, Lacalle Pou spoke about the importance of the creation of the Ministry of the Environment in 2020. “Before, the office in charge of the National Directorate of the Environment did not have ministerial rank. Today all the ministers and the minister sit on equal terms de Ambiente actively participates transversally in various public policies,” he said.
