North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) has apologized for the serious technical breakdown at the start of the Abitur in 2023. The school-leaving exams planned for Wednesday in several subjects in the German state had been postponed to Friday at short notice due to massive technical problems on Tuesday evening. There had been significant problems downloading the tasks from a server.
“This must not happen”
“It must not happen that the Abitur exams in NRW have to be postponed – no matter what the reason is,” Wüst wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. The Prime Minister apologized to high school graduates, parents, teachers and other people affected.
Now it must be ensured that all of their exams can be taken “under the best possible conditions”. “The students have a right to good and fair conditions for their Abitur,” emphasized the head of government. That’s the focus, and “we’re working on it with every effort”.
“Thorough investigation” announced
Wüst called for a “thorough investigation of the events”. It is good that School Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) has already initiated the clarification so that something like this does not happen again. Feller also apologized for the breakdown on Wednesday.
Exam dates in other subjects are planned for Thursday. According to the authorities, these can take place. The download of the written Abitur tasks for the exams on Thursday “is going smoothly,” said the Ministry of Education on Twitter on Wednesday. The exams could “take place as planned”.
