In the history of cycling, only Davide Rebellin (2004), Philippe Gilbert (2011) and Anna van der Breggen (2017) have managed to complete the Amstel Gold Race as well as the Fleche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège within a week win. Slovenia’s cycling star Tadej Pogacar is preparing to imitate them in the rare Ardennes triple.
The UAE captain once again left all opponents behind in Fleche on the extremely steep final climb, the Mur de Huy. “It doesn’t get boring to be the first to cross the finish line,” said the two-time Tour winner, who was so dominant this year and who again had a reliable helper at his side in Marchtrenker Felix Großschartner.
The third stage of the Tour of the Alps from Ritten to Brentonico San Valentino brought a victory for the Bora team. Lennard Kämna triumphed on the hilltop finish, Christian Pömer from Linz acted as sporting director in the support car. Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) retained the overall leader’s green jersey in fourth place.
Felix Gall (AG2R), who fell just before the finish the day before, had to pay tribute to his numerous abrasions and lost 1:06 minutes. Lukas Pöstlberger from Schwanenstadt in the national team jersey fled, won two sprint classifications and was only caught on the final climb.
