A Hercules machine from the Austrian Armed Forces should have landed in Zeltweg on Wednesday morning. But a few minutes after the scheduled start at Linz-Hörsching Airport, the route changed.

“Oil in the machine’s hold must have heated up, which led to smoke developing,” says Colonel Michael Bauer, spokesman for the Austrian Armed Forces. Because the smoke had penetrated the cockpit, the plane was ordered back to Linz for safety reasons.

In the meantime, seven fire brigades had been alerted to a flight emergency, but the operation was quickly canceled. The plane landed safely in Linz, but the incident would be “closely investigated,” as Bauer says. Nobody was injured in the incident.
