He Ministry of Tourism shared this Wednesday the statistical data for the first quarter of the year referring to the number of Argentine citizens who entered the country and what amounts they spent during the last summer season.
As reported by the government portfolio, they entered Uruguay some 716,548 Argentine touristsmeaning an increase of 2.19% compared to the latest pre-pandemic numbers registered in 2019, when some 698,590 citizens had entered from the neighboring country.
In turn, the year-on-year growth compared to the first quarter of 2021, when sanitary restrictions were still in force by the two countries, was almost 204%since then only some 235,964 people had entered.
Despite this increase in people, Argentines spent about 413 million dollarsmeaning a year-over-year collapse of 17% Compared to the 506 million dollars that they had left in 2019, but a shot of almost 83% compared to the first quarter of 2022, where they paid amounts of 236 million dollars.

Tax free sales registered an increase of 16% compared to the pre-pandemic
According to information from Global Blue ArgentinaUruguay shows sustained growth in terms of tax free sales, climbing up to 16% during the first quarter (January-February) vs. 2020 pre-pandemic numbers.
Since December 2022, 80% of these sales were to Argentines and reported values higher than pre-pandemic levels. Tourists with a “premium” profile increased their spending by an average of 36%, and made 95% of the total purchases in Montevideo and east point.
