A 42-year-old man from Lower Austria is said to have shot his partner on Thursday in his mother’s house in Melk, probably in a dispute. The gunman then holed himself up on the top floor of the building. Negotiations with the perpetrator to surrender were unsuccessful. Therefore, the Cobra stormed the house and arrested the accused. Shots may have been fired, the 42-year-old was injured and taken to a hospital.
In the evening the man had visited his mother’s house. The gunman is said to have shot the 62-year-old partner. The woman fled the building and alerted police and ambulance. The Cobra was also informed immediately. “The colleagues knew that there was a seriously injured person in the house who needed help,” says police spokesman Stefan Loidl from the Lower Austria State Police Headquarters.
Officers from the “rapid intervention group” (SIG) ventured into the home and took the victim, who was still alive at the time, outside. But the rescue workers could do nothing there, the 62-year-old died of his serious injuries.
When it became clear that only the alleged perpetrator was still in the house, members of the “Negotiation Group East” tried to persuade the man to give up. The area in the village of Pielach had already been closed to a large extent at that time. This measure was unsuccessful, which is why officers from the Cobra accessed the ship at around 11 p.m. The 42-year-old was arrested. It was confirmed by the state police department of Lower Austria that shots had been fired during the course of the official act. However, how it came about and who fired remained open. Police officers were not injured, the spokesman said. Everything else is “the subject of the investigation”. The handgun was found in the house. The accused was admitted to a hospital as an inpatient, where he was still on Friday. The suspect has not yet been questioned. Therefore, the motive for the crime on Friday was unknown. Family disputes arose.
The mother could not be questioned either. Although she was unharmed, she suffered a severe shock and is receiving psychological care.
A spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office in St. Pölten announced that the accused was still in police custody for the time being. Because there is still no interrogation protocol, no application has been made to impose pre-trial detention.
