He Bank for International Settlements (BIS) appointed its new deputy director of the Monetary and Economic Department and director of the Financial Stability Policy and it will be neither more nor less than a German-Uruguayan. It’s about the economist Gaston Geloswho will replace Stijn Claessens from September 1.

Gelos, who completed a doctorate at Yale University and among his assets has a diploma from the University of Bonn, will replace the Dutchman, who has held the position of deputy director of the Monetary and Economic department at the BIS since 2018 and who will leave the entity September 30th. Meanwhile, the incoming official will be for a five year period.

Until now Gelos worked in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as assistant director in the Western Hemisphere department and as chief of mission for Mexico. The German-Uruguayan economist joined the multilateral credit organization in 1998, 25 years ago.

Previously, he was director of the Monetary Policies and Macroeconomic Prudence Division in the Monetary and Capital Markets Department. In that role, he led research, policy, and technical assistance work on monetary policy and macroeconomic prudence.

He also directed the global financial stability analysis division, where he supervised thematic work for the International Monetary Fund report, and served as resident representative for Argentina and Uruguay at the multilateral financial entity.

“His research includes work on capital flows, financial stability and monetary policy and has been widely published in academic journals,” the Bank for International Settlements described in an official statement announcing his appointment.
