At least three soldiers killed in an attack in Colombia for the capture of the drug trafficker Otoniel

Otoniel was arrested on Saturday in the department of Antioquia, where this attack took place., reported the news agencies AFP and Europa Press.

Colombian forces sources informed the newspaper El Tiempo that the attacked soldiers were part of the 17th. Army Brigade.

The attack, which was quickly repudiated by the president Ivan Duque, was perpetrated when the military traveled in a military vehicle between Turbo and San Pedro de Urabá, in the department of Antioquia.

According to the Armed Forces, the action would respond to retaliation for the arrest of the leader of the Gulf Clan, Dairo Antonio Úsuga David, alias “Otoniel”, the most wanted drug trafficker in the country.

The three wounded soldiers were taken to a hospital in the area in a helicopter, and medical sources say that their health is delicate.

President Duque condemned the attack on his Twitter account and called the event “cowardly.”

These criminals and drug traffickers who attack our Public Force will be persecuted and brought to justice“, he asserted.

Colombian forces are on high alert against possible actions by the Clan del Golfo.

The government of Colombia announced that it is working on the extradition to the United States of “Otoniel”, captured in a mega-operation in the jungle of the northwest of the country in which some 700 soldiers participated backed by 18 helicopters.

“Against ‘Otoniel’ there is an extradition order (to the United States), that extradition order is (…) the one that is still in progress,” said Defense Minister Diego Molano.

Duque celebrated the arrest of the 50-year-old drug lord and said that his extradition is “urgent for the security of the hemisphere, so that the entire network of links between the cartels of different countries is known.”

The Government accuses other armed groups such as the National Liberation Army (ELN), the last recognized guerrilla in the country, and the rebels who departed from the peace pact signed with the FARC in 2016 (known as dissidents) to finance themselves with the income from drug trafficking.
