Leal will no longer be investigated in the Astesiano case

Prosecutor Sabrina Flores filed the case on the grounds that there is no way to verify illegal acts. For the Frente Amplio leader it was “58 days of infamy and arbitrariness.”

Research on the sociologist and leader of the Broad Front, Gustavo Lealin the framework of the Astesiano case, was archived by the prosecutor Sabrina Flores, and he pointed out that both he and his family lived 58 days of “infamy and arbitrariness.”

Leal was the first and only political referent investigated in one of the parallel investigations to the case about the former head of presidential security, Alexander Astesiano; although, according to his defense, the reasons why, in just 15 minutes of meeting with the then prosecutor in charge, were never clear. Gabriela Fossati, his status went from being a witness to being investigated.

From then on, a constant dynamic of controversies and back and forths began between the lawyer of the front player, Diego Camano, and the magistrate, which culminated in the notice of a formal complaint by Leal due to the irregularities and for not having provided him with the basic guarantees during the investigation. Finally, this was one of the reasons why the prosecutor of Juan Gomez Court resolved the transfer of Fossati to another Prosecutor’s Office. And, thus, the case was left in charge of Flores who, finally, filed the case.

Faced with this news, Leal used his account Twitter to ensure that “it was 58 days of infamy and arbitrariness that I and my family had to live through.” “Today the Prosecutor’s Office closed the investigation because it understood that there was no reason to suppose any irregularity“wrote the former director of Coexistence and Citizen Security during the Broad Front government.

The reasons why Flores filed the case

“The private actions of people who in no way attack public order or harm a third party are exempt from the authority of magistrates. No inhabitant of the Republic He will be forced to do what the law does not mandate, nor be deprived of what it does not prohibit”, states the resolution that archives the investigation against Leal, citing the Constitution, as the former official himself shared on his networks.

In this sense, prosecutor Flores understood that the fact for which Leal was being investigated —a private meeting with Astesiano’s father at his home in Chuy Bar— It did not imply any type of crime or suspicious behavior in itself, but it was a “conversation between two free adults”, according to the spokesperson for the Prosecutor’s Office, Javier Benech, to the press. “There were no other two witnesses. There was no offer of any money,” she added.

For his part, Leal assured in his message that he will continue with the “serenity and coherence of always”, as well as “with more force than ever”.
