The Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office declared new charges against the governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, arrested and imprisoned for his role in the violent demonstrations and protests that in 2019 forced the fall of then-president Evo Morales, and that would imply an extension of his status pretrial detention for another four months.

Camacho was being tried for terrorism to the degree of authorship in the framework of the ‘coup d’état I’ case, which addresses the events that occurred in November 2019, when President Morales was forced to leave the country due to military pressure and in the midst of suspicions about the transparency of the elections.

Now, the Prosecutor’s Office added to the charge a wide variety of crimes that range from financing terrorist acts to the improper use of public goods and services as governor of the richest region of Bolivia and historically contrary to the governments of the Movement for Socialism ( MAS) founded by Morales and to which the current president, Luis Arce, belongs.

His lawyer, Martín Camacho, declared that this accusation, presented yesterday before the 1st Anti-Corruption Investigation Court of La Paz, implies that the prosecutors “are requesting four more months of detention for these alleged new crimes within the same case that is already under arrest. “, reported the Europa Press news agency.

“What the government is looking for, obviously, is to continue with this unjust detention by adding four more months,” he added.

On April 30, the four months of preventive detention that had been decided by the Justice on December 30 will be completed.

Since December 30, 2022, the governor of Santa Cruz has been held in the Chonchocoro prison, in the municipality of Viacha de La Paz, for the coup d’état case.

After he was arrested, violent groups linked to civic groups and the Cruceñista Youth Union (UJC) looted and burned public institutions.
