In the end it was just enough for first place: Yesterday’s election Sunday was a difficult one for the Salzburg ÖVP. With only 30.4 percent and thus a loss of 7.4 percentage points, Governor Wilfried Haslauer again managed to finish as the strongest party. However, this was the second-worst result in the party’s history. Despite the leadership debate at federal level, the losses of the SPÖ remained manageable across the country. With 17.9 percent, the Social Democrats with their top candidate David Egger still ended up with the historically worst election result of the SPÖ in Salzburg.

While the NEOS missed entering the state parliament with a meager 4.2 percent, there were ultimately two big winners: FPÖ (25.7 percent) and KPÖ (11.7 percent) grew significantly. Experts even see the Salzburg election result as a possible harbinger at the federal level.

Haslauer did not speak about his coalition preferences on election day. What coalition do you expect in Salzburg? Vote and join the discussion!
