There was a head-on collision between a truck and a car, reported the FF Wiener Neustadt, which was involved in the rescue work. The two car occupants died, the truck driver was seriously injured, the Red Cross said. The S4 was locked.
Trucks and cars collided
According to Stefan Loidl from the state police headquarters in St. Pölten, the accident happened shortly before 8 a.m. in an oncoming traffic area. The truck is likely to have crossed the double barrier line and collided with a car occupied by two people, said Andreas Zenker, spokesman for the Lower Austria Red Cross, on request. The truck driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, the ÖAMTC said. According to Zenker, one person was slightly injured in a subsequent accident. Several ambulances were on duty.
Difficult use
The Wiener Neustadt fire brigade moved out with a heavy crane vehicle to the rescue work, it was announced in a broadcast. “The scene of the incident was extremely confusing at the beginning due to the massive deformation. First the truck had to be lifted off the car with heavy equipment, and then the occupants had to be freed with hydraulic rescue equipment,” reported operations manager Christian Pfeiffer. For the two people, however, any help came too late. The requested emergency doctor helicopter “Christophorus 3” finally flew back without a patient.
The S4 was blocked in both directions in the affected section. There were significant traffic jams, the ÖAMTC reported. An end to the ban was not foreseeable for the time being.
