Ancap will produce methanol from biogenic CO2

The World Energy Conferencewhich took place in the Spanish city of Madrid, presented Uruguay as “the champion of the energy transition in Latin America”, in relation to the country’s concern about CO2 emissions, where a methanol production project was also announced from biogenic CO2 in the plant of paysandu.

The event brought together Latin American and European leaders who debated with the objective of carrying out solutions for the energy transition. There, the general manager of ancap, Ignacio Horvath, He highlighted Uruguay’s work in light of the potential that hydrogen has in the country and highlighted “the political commitment to the environment, the recent alliance with Germany, and the agreement with the port of Rotterdam,” according to the specialized media Surtidores.

In his presentation, Horvath detailed the methanol production project from biogenic CO2 emitted by the cereal plant in Paysandú and established that “the project has the potential to produce 30,000 m3 of methanol for the production of sustainable aviation fuels or e -fuels”.

Among the other opportunities that Uruguay offers to the energy transition, the manager of Ancap highlighted the conclusions carried out with the world Bank on the production of hydrogen in the sea where it is possible to generate “blocks of 500 km2 with the potential of generate 3.5GW and 320 thousand tons of hydrogen per year each. As well, he highlighted the production of SAF and green diesel, which is made from the hydrogenation of vegetable oils, and which has great opportunities to be commercialized in the European market.

Hydrogen, an opportunity for Uruguay

The strategy of the energy transition is being led by Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), together with other government areas that contribute in an integrated manner such as the Ministry of Environment.

Green hydrogen for Uruguay means a great billing opportunity, so much so that by 2040 a billing of $2.1 billion dollars in exports, although it would require an investment of $6,000 million dollars; For this project, 9 companies joined with the aim of exploiting this fuel. For this, the Uruguay XXI institute is in search of the arrival of new investors. The companies that intend to invest in Uruguayan green hydrogen are Spanish, German and Nordic.

The investment in green hydrogen would represent a development of new skills and trades in the sector, which would give Uruguay greater generation of jobs, skills and new professions. Also, it would mean a development in adjacent sectors such as routes, trains and ports that would give more jobs as a result.
