A 7.3 earthquake shook Indonesia and a tsunami warning is issued

The quake occurred at a depth of 20 kilometers, prompting authorities from the Indonesian Meteorology Department to issue a tsunami warning.

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake was recorded on Tuesday in the west of the island of Sumatra in Indonesiathe Indonesian geophysics agency (BMKG) said.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) previously estimated the tremor to have a magnitude of 6.9.

The quake struck at a depth of 20 kilometers, EMSC said, prompting authorities from the Indonesian Meteorology Department to activate a tsunami warning.

Indonesia suffers frequent earthquakes, since it is located inside the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a seismically active zone where several plates of the earth’s crust intersect.
