Abdala assured that the PIT-CNT will discuss the disastrous social security reform

Along with other Uruguayan political personalities, Marcelo Abdala announced himself, once again, against the pension reform at the International Worker’s Day event.

At the commemorative ceremony for the Labor Day in Uruguay and for the anniversary of the workers’ struggle, the president of the PIT-CNT, Marcelo Abdalatook advantage of the space to proclaim again against the new social security reform law, question the salary and ask for the eradication of acts of corruption, in relation to cases of Sebastian Marset and Alexander Astesiano.

This Monday the PIT-CNT called to concentrate on the May 1 Square – in front of the Legislative Palace – as it has done historically, with the aim of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1973 General Strike at the beginning of the dictatorship that took place between 1973 and 1985. And, secondly, to honor the 40th anniversary of the return of workers to the streets to commemorate Labor Day, at a time when the dictatorship was coming to an end.

Beyond the commemorations, the president of the PIT-CNT He took advantage of the situation to show himself against the social security reform and advance possible actions to try to discuss it. “We do not rule out any form of action to propose another pension reform. We include the possibility of challenging this nefarious law”, remarked Abdala and assured that “The union movement is going to fight for an alternative reform of social security that changes the financing goals, that expands rights and that is financially sustainable, but, first of all, humanely”.

On the other hand, he spoke about salaries and explained that “The GDP grew by more than 3.5%,” and that “the salary is 3.7% below 2019”. “It is clear that the real salary losses are never going to be recovered again,” stated Abdala, who explained that 541,000 Uruguayans earn less than $25,000. In addition, she called for concrete employment policies to deal with unemployment, which mainly affects women and young people.

The president of the PIT-CNT also did not miss an opportunity to talk about the corruption cases of the drug trafficker Sebastián Marset and the former custodian of the president Luis Lacalle Pou, Alejandro Astesiano and called for “Eradicate from national life all corruption cases that tarnish, attack and can even weaken democracy”.
